On selection of individual trees for regeneration cutting
Milan Košulič sen. (pp. 344-347)

A non-clear cutting system is characterised also by the selection of individual trees for regeneration cutting. In selecting a forest manager has to consider multiple criteria, namely qualities and functions in the stand, its species classification, health, vitality, damage, social position of the tree in the stand and its relations with neighbouring trees, effect of its removal upon the stand environment and also its increment, dimensions, assortment quality and chances of realisation. Single trees differ in intrinsic intra-population genetic variability, they manifest different reaction to sunlight and other environmental impacts. The stands differ in distribution of climax and pioneer species including the transitional types what also affects their production potential. The author deals with the aspect of volume production and tree increment and their application in practical selection of trees for cutting.

Pelletised fertilisers “Strom-Konifer” and “Strom-Folixyl” and their application in forestry
Dušan Vavříček (pp. 350-353)

The analysis of several verification series of these fertilisers during the vegetation period in cultivation of containerised planting stock of Norway spruce, European beech, large-leaved linden, and wild service tree in different organogenic substrates at forest nurseries resulted in these conclusions: the fertilisers “Strom-Konifer” (Tree-conifer) for coniferous and “Strom-Folixyl” (Tree-folixyl) for deciduous tree species applied in peat and well ripened substrates outweigh common mineral fertilisers by their effect on the height increment of plants; they have a marked positive effect on the root development, namely the fine root fraction; in extreme conditions of an one-off application in non-ripened peat-bark substrates the Strom-Folixyl fertiliser’s effects are fully commensurable with a super-standard fertiliser Kristalon in all production parameters while Strom-Konifer is as good as Kristalon only in the volume of fine roots, namely as the result of stimulant contents in the pellet mixture (the shoot biomass then requires a repeated fertilising during the vegetation or if necessary a higher initial dose); in classical well ripened substrates the fertilisers provide optimum nutrition with all basic macronutrients. The tested fertilisers may be applied successfully in the cultivation of containerised planting material of forest species by technological procedures with a one-year exposition. A similar important effect of Strom-Konifer and Strom-Folixyl can show in afforestation, when a pellet will be applied into the root ball of a containerised planting immediately before outplanting.

Quarantene needle blights in the Czech Republic
Libor Jankovský, Dagmar Palovčíková, Marie Šindelková (pp. 370-372)

The needle blights caused by Mycosphaerella pini E. Rostrup and M. dearnessii M.E. Barr are quarantine pests according of EPPO recommendation and Czech law no. 147/1996. The first record about M. pini in Czech coming from Austrian pine (Pinus nigra) imported from Hungary within the spring 1999. The M. pini and also M. dearnessii were determined in the spring 2000 on the deliveries of saplings of Austrian pine and Mountain pine (Pinus nigra) from Hungary. The Dothistroma needle blight was firstly registered from the open air in Czech on the plantation of Austrian pine by the Jedovnice, approximately 30 km to the North from Brno in the elevation about 460 m above see level. The infection was not observed on Scotch pine plantation in the proximity of this focus. The Dothistroma needle blight was registered on the Austrian pine and Austrian pine in the South - western Moravia by the town Moravské Budějovice, further on the Austrian pine by the the Bystřička in the Vsetin district, on the Mountain pine and Bosnian pine (Pinus leucodermis) by the Litomyšl in the East Bohemia and on the Austrian pine in the village Kouroužné, 60 km North - West from Brno by the river Svratka.
