DOUGLAS FIR AT SCHOOL FOREST ENTERPRISE KŘTINY

Petr Kantor, Antonín Martiník, Tomáš Sedláček (pp. 210 - 212)

The article deals with results of inventory survey and namely with production possibilities of Douglas fir at the territory of School Forest Enterprise (SFE) “Masaryk’s Forest” at Křtiny. The introduction briefly characterises natural conditions of SFE as area with prevailing 2nd and 3rd forest altitudinal zones. According to the last forest management plan Douglas fir is present at 434 stands covering in total 109,14 ha of reduced area (1,1 % of SFE area).

Relative representation is there about 6 times higher than in the whole Czech Republic. Douglas fir generally does not represent the major species but it is represented in the stand mainly up to 30 %. It is interesting the oldest planting of Douglas fir dates back to 1844 while the oldest live Douglas fir tree in the Czech Republic was probably planted in 1843. Methodology of production survey was founded on selection of stands in the 10th age class with a sufficient representation of Douglas fir. Basic taxation data (like DBH, height of crown bottom) were measured in ten Douglas firs with the widest diameter. Out of this set 16 trees were selected then for detailed analysis of diameter increment. The top stand height in the stand mixed with Douglas fir at the age of 91 to 100 years ranged between 29 to 42 m and the DBH of measured trees between 54 to 79 cm. The volume of single trees aged 91-100 reached even 9 or 10 m3. The volume increment was calculated from the increment measurement then. It achieved in selected trees wonderful 0,78-1 m3 for the last five years, i.e. 0,15-0,2 m3 per year. Based on present experience the authors suggest growing Douglas fir in the way common in the SFE, i.e. as individually or clusterwise admixed species on acid and fertile sites of 2nd to 4th vegetation zone. At the same time they suggest further objective assessment of the possibility to increase the representation of this species in the forests of Czechia.

STAND FORMING POTENTIAL OF THE WILD CHERRY
Vilém Podrázský, Jaroslav Kobliha, Jiří Remeš, Ivo Kupka, Renata Růžová, Pavel Karnet (pp. 213 - 215)

Wild cherry (Cerasus avium (L.) Moench) is in the center of the research interest in many European countries. This fact is connected with two main reasons: the pressure on the social role of forestry including the biodiversity and the interest of the forestry sector itself in the increase of the variety of wood resources. The presented article document results of the research project studying the breeding and silviculture related to the species mentioned, respectively the part concerning stand forming potential of wild cherry. It was concluded: the natural regeneration of this species is not possible to be used systematically, the artificial reproduction offers more advantages. The optimum percentage of the cherry in forest stands varies between 30 - 40 %, in this case, the volume pruduction as well as the mean stem parameters are optimal. It was established the research basis including medium age stands and plantations of cherry. In the future, three cases have to be studied: (1) “natural” occurence of cherry in forest stands and its role in close-to-nature forestry, (2) optimal use of this species in the sustainable forestry, (3) use of improved material in the plantation forestry.
